- ‘2010세계해양포럼’ 공동의장을 맡게 된 소감을 말씀해주시지요.
올해로 4회째를 맞는 2010세계해양포럼(World Ocean Forum 2010)에 국내외 저명하신 석학들과 함께 공동의장으로 참여하게 되어 무한한 영광으로 생각하며, 무엇보다도 국제해상 운송사업을 운영하는 선사 CEO로서 해양산업이 가진 무한한 가능성과 잠재성을 재인식하고, 날로 심각해지고 있는 지구촌 기후변화에 따른 해양환경의 위기를 진단하고, 해결 모색을 위한 토론의 장이 되었으면 합니다.
해양분야 다보스포럼 육성과 해양을 통한 지구촌 미래를 개척한다는 대외 취지에 맞도록 규모 면에서, 질적인 면에서 좋은 평가를 받을 수 있도록 대회를 성공적으로 치뤄, ‘세계 5대 해양강국’으로 자리매김 할 수 있도록 역할을 다하겠습니다.
- 글로벌 종합물류 기업 CEO로서 다양한 나라를 방문하고 있는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 주로 기울이는 관심사는 무엇인가요.
한진해운은 컨테이너선, 벌크선, LNG선 등 약 200여척 선박으로 전세계 60여개의 항로와 부정기 항로를 운영하고 있으며, 전 세계 200여개의 해외 지점소 등 거미줄 영업망을 운영하고 있는 글로벌 종합 물류 기업입니다.
매년 정기적으로 해외지역 영업/물류 조직/시설 등을 둘러보며 사업현장을 점검 받고, 직원 들을 독려하며, 필요에 따라서는 영업 전략을 논의하는 자리를 마련하기도 합니다만, 한편으로는 현지의 해운/해양 관계자들과의 만남의 기회를 통하여 각국의 Green Port/Terminal 정책, 이산화탄소 배출 최소화 노력 등의 친환경 정책 그리고 해양투기로 인한 환경오염을 근본적으로 방지할 수 있는 친환경 시설 보급, 해양 풍력 발전 등의 신재생에너지 분야 등의 논의도 하고 있습니다.
- 2010 WOF의 메인 주제 ‘기후변화와 해양의 도전’에 대해 해양기업 CEO로서 이번 주제를 어떻게 보시는지요.
이번 포럼 주제는 오늘날 세계인이 직면한 문제 가운데 가장 중요한 문제 가운데 하나입니다. 앞으로 기후변화가 가져올 예측 불가능성에 대해 지구의 70%나 차지하고 있는 바다에 대한 준비된 모습을 보여야 할 필요가 있으며, 무엇보다도 국제해상 운송사업을 운영하는 CEO로서 기후변화에 따른 상업적인 기회 또한 새로운 도전의 하나로 바라봐야 하는 시점입니다.
1년 내내 얼어있어 그 동안 이론상으로만 존재해왔던 북극 항로가 열리면 유럽에서 극동아시아까지 운항거리가 지금보다 약 3분의 1이상 줄어들고, 캐나다의 북극 군도를 경유해 대서양과 태평양을 연결하는 북서항로가 열릴 수 있습니다. 이러한 북극해 항로의 가능성과 전망에 대한 연구는 이미 2년전 양현재단에서 학술/연구 활동을 지원한 바 있습니다.
기업인으로서의 뿐만 아니라 해양분야 연구자, 과학계의 권위자들, 해양정책분야의 전문가들이 향후 20~30년 가장 관심 있게 지켜봐야 할 주제가 아닌가 싶습니다.
- 2010 WOF의 국제적 네트워킹에 대해 어떤 기대를 가지고 있으신지요?
이번 WOF는 세계 무대에서 활약하는 해양연구자, 해양산업 비즈니스 대표, 해양국가 정부대표, 국제기구의 책임자 등 국내외 해양관련 관계자 약 2,000여명이 참석하는 명실상부한 국제적인 해양관련 국제회의입니다.
이번 WOF를 통하여 국제적 네트워킹이 보다 공고히 될 수 있는 공조체제가 가동되고, 해당 국가/산업/기업 등으로의 네트워킹이 지속적으로 확대되어 미래의 해양산업에 대한 관심과 공감대가 전세계로 확산되기를 기대합니다.
- WOF가 ‘해양 분야 다보스포럼’으로 도약하려면 어떻게 해야 할까요.
국제도시 부산의 위상을 높인 세계해양포럼은 해양의 미래에 대한 청사진을 제시하고, 해양산업의 흐름을 주도할 수 있어야 할 것입니다.
단순히 정보를 교환하는 장으로만 머물러서는 안되며, 정부와 민간이 함께 노력해 실천사항을 공유하고, 상호협력의 기회를 가짐으로써 ‘세계해양분야연구/노력’에 국내외 해양리더들의 실천 분위기를 확산시켜 나가야 할 것입니다.
이번 WOF 프로그램 관련하여 한가지 말씀드리고 싶은 점은 메인 주제인 ‘기후변화와 해양의 도전’과 함께 구성된 산업별 세션에 있어 실제 응용 가능한 비즈니스 차원을 융합시키는데 그치지 않고, 보다 실질적이고, 구체적인 사례, 논의와 함께 가시적 성과들이 나와야 할 것입니다.
- 해양지식의 허브 WOF가 국제사회와 해양산업계에서 어떤 기여를 해야한다고 보시는지.
WOF는 2007년 첫 행사를 시작으로 매년 국내외 최고의 해양 분야 석학, 전문가들이 한자리에 모여 해양 환경을 포함한 인류미래와 자원, 에너지, 조선, 물류 등의 주제를 이슈화 시키면서 세계 해양분야 최고의 해양지식포럼으로 성장하였습니다.
앞으로도 해양분야에서 풀어야 할 문제들을 끊임없이 제기하고, 다양한 차원에서 논의를 확산해 사회적 공감대를 조성해야 하고, 또한, 미래지향적 해양 산업계의 분야로까지 접목시켜 다양한 연구, 개발로 계승, 발전시켜 나아가 해양을 통한 지구촌 미래를 개척할 수 있는 토대가 되어야겠습니다.
- WOF가 올해로 4회째입니다. 향후 더욱 강력한 글로벌 경쟁력을 확보하려면 무엇이 필요한지요.
전 세계가 직면하고, 공감하고 있는 주제들을 지속적으로 이슈화 시키고, ‘탁상공론’이 아닌 실효성 있는 대안을 제시할 수 있어야 하며, 무엇보다도 WOF가 한 단계 도약하기 위해서는 전 세계 해양/해운 관련 정부관계자/ 학계/ 재계 등의 글로벌 리더들의 네트워크 구축, 참여가 절실히 요구되어집니다.

“I expect WOF will suggest effective alternatives and establish a global network”
- How do you feel about being one of the session chairpersons of World Ocean Forum 2010?
I am honored to participate in the 4th World Ocean Forum asWOFco-chairperson, along with the world’s great scholars. As CEO of an international shipping carrier, I hope this forum will be a venue to review the boundless possibilities and potentials of the marine industry, to recognize the worsening crisis of marine environment caused by climate change, and to discuss solutions to the problems.
For a Davos Forum in marine area and the world’s future, I will do my best for the successful event both in quality and in quantity, which can help Korea strengthen its status as the World’s 5thMarinePower.
- Your position title gives you the opportunity to visit various countries and see the issues facing them firsthand. What kind of issues are you most interested in?
HANJIN SHIPPING, a global leading logistics company, is operating about 60 regular lines and tramp routes with nearly 200 ships including container ships, bulk carriers and LNG carriers and connecting with about 200 overseas branches in the world.
I regularly make an annual check on overseas branches including sales & logistics department, organizations and facilities. And then, if necessary, I discuss sales strategies. In the meantime, I put emphasis on eco-friendly policies such as Green Port/Terminal policy and efforts to minimize carbon emissions of individual countries with local marine and ocean officials. In addition, the renewable energy issue including green facilities and ocean wind power is also on the agenda to respond to the pollution caused by ocean disposals.
- The theme of WOF 2010 is “Climate Change & Ocean Challenge.” Please give your opinion on this year’s theme as an ocean policy expert and a representative of an international organization.
This year’s theme is one of the most important issues that the world is now facing. The ocean, covering as much as 70% of the Earth surface, needs to be ready to respond to the unpredictable situation caused by climate change. Above all, as CEO of the international ocean logistics company, I need to regard the climate change as a new challenge for better profits.
As the North Pole Route opens, the sailing distance between Europe and Far East Asia will be cut by a third and North-West Passage will connect the Atlantic with the Pacific via the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The study and research for such possibilities and prospects of the North Pole Route was supported by Yanghyun Foundation two years ago.
I think that the issue has to be high on the agenda for business executives, marine scientists, scientific experts and marine policy officials for the next 20~30 years.
- What do you expect from International Symposium on Expo 2012 Yeosu Koreaㆍ World Ocean Forum 2010 in terms of the international networking?
WOF 2010 is a renowned international ocean conference with about 2,000 participants related to the ocean from home and abroad including ocean scientists, representatives from maritime businesses, officials from maritime countries and international organizations.
This year’s WOF can be an opportunity to establish a cooperation system for the stronger global network. I hope that the network expands its area into countries, industries and businesses to broaden the world’s interest, and recognition about the maritime industry.
- What would be needed for WOF to leap forward to “Ocean Davos Forum?” Please tell us what sessions are required to be strengthened and complemented.
WOF has raised the status of Busan as an international city. Through such a great forum, we need to draw up the blueprint for the ocean’s future and take the lead in the maritime industry.
In this context, we are asked to form a consensus among the world’s ocean leaders that efforts and researches on the ocean need to be put into practice by sharing the efforts and activities of governments and public sectors and cooperating with each other, instead of simply sharing the related information.
One thing I want to talk about is that industrial sessions with the theme of “Climate Change & Ocean Challenge” are required to create tangible outcomes along with the discussion of real and detailed cases, beyond suggesting applicable businesses models.
- In your opinion, how can World Ocean Forum contribute to international society and the global ocean industry?
Starting 2007, the annual forum has made efforts that the subject such as the ocean environment, the mankind’s future and resources, energy, shipbuilding and logistics can come into spotlight with the world’s best ocean experts and leaders attending, developing as the world’s best ocean knowledge forum.
WOF has to continue to raise the problems about the ocean and expand discussion at various levels for broader social consensus. In addition, with the development and research of the future-oriented ocean industries, the forum will lay a foundation to make a better future on the basis of the ocean.
- This year marks the fourth year of WOF. The forum has grown both in quality and volume. What do you think is needed to secure stronger global competitiveness in the future?
WOF needs to continue to deal with the issues the world is facing and emphasizing, and provide not the useless suggestions but the real solutions. And, more important thing for WOF to develop is the global network among the ocean leaders from governments, academia and businesses.
Eun-young Choi was assigned as Vice President of Cyber Logitech, HANJIN SHIPPING’s subsidiary company, in July, 2006 and also as Vice President of HANJIN SHIPPING in February, 2007, as President of HANJIN SHIPPING in January, 2009, and as CEO & President of HANJIN SHIPPING HOLDINGS in December, 2009, respectively. She has focused on the system of self-management and responsibility management to make HANJIN SHIPPING, the Korea’s first and the world’s 10thcompany, the best global logistics business. Under the system, professional managers in each sector can display their abilities in the company. In addition, she has made efforts to in form the world of the importance of Korea’s maritime industries.
